Julien Brunet, whose early primary school years were marked by academic failure, turned to vocational training—otherwise, given his poor grades, he would have been on the verge of homelessness—which saved him from despair. He found his calling in advertising design and earned a diploma in advertising design from the Corvisart vocational high school in Paris in 1998. Following the advice of one of his teachers, he enrolled in an art school, not in Paris, which he considered too elitist, but in the provinces. This choice led him to the heart of France, to Rouen, the city of a thousand bell towers. He also discovered that Rouen was the site of the first major chemical industrial disaster in 1770, not far from his current home, as well as the infamous Lubrizol factory that exploded in 2019. The city is surrounded by numerous industrial sites, including petrochemical plants, some of which are among the largest.
After five years at the Rouen Regional School of Fine Arts (ERBA, now ESADHAR), Julien earned several diplomas, attesting to his success. After completing his higher education in 2003, he continued his artistic journey, gaining recognition through exhibitions, grants, and residencies. Despite his tenacity and several decades of almost daily practice, Julien struggles to build a network. The precariousness of his situation, combined with the inherent difficulties of being an artist, makes it hard to achieve a stable position. Despite the hopes raised by his exhibitions, the feedback is often disappointing, as nothing goes as planned. After more than twenty years, Julien is leaving the art world for good. He will, however, participate in future projects, but no longer believes he can make a living from his art. Having wasted all that time wanting to be an artist and live off it, Julien is no longer truly living. He barely survives, waiting for the end of the world, which, for him, is also doomed to failure.

Il trouva sa vocation dans le design publicitaire et obtint un diplôme en design publicitaire au lycée professionnel Corvisart à Paris en 1998. Suivant le conseil d’un de ses professeurs, il s’inscrivit dans une école d’art, non pas à Paris, qu’il jugeait trop élitiste, mais en province. Ce choix le mena au cÅ“ur de la France, à Rouen, la ville aux mille clochers. Il découvrit également que Rouen fut le théâtre de la première grande catastrophe industrielle chimique en 1770, non loin de son domicile actuel, ainsi que de la tristement célèbre usine Lubrizol qui explosa en 2019. La ville est entourée de nombreux sites industriels, notamment des usines pétrochimiques, dont certaines figurent parmi les plus importantes.
Après cinq ans à l’École régionale des beaux-arts de Rouen (ERBA, aujourd’hui ESADHAR), Julien obtient plusieurs diplômes, attestant de sa réussite. Après avoir terminé ses études supérieures en 2003, il poursuit son parcours artistique, se faisant connaître grâce à des expositions, des bourses et des résidences. Malgré sa ténacité et plusieurs décennies de pratique quasi quotidienne, Julien peine à se constituer un réseau. La précarité de sa situation, conjuguée aux difficultés inhérentes au métier d’artiste, rend difficile l’obtention d’une position stable. Malgré les espoirs suscités par ses expositions, les retours sont souvent décevants, car rien ne se passe comme prévu. Après plus de vingt ans, Julien quitte définitivement le monde de l’art. Il participera toutefois à de futurs projets, mais ne croit plus pouvoir vivre de son art. Ayant gaspillé tout ce temps à vouloir être artiste et en vivre, Julien ne vit plus vraiment. Il survit à peine, attendant la fin du monde, qui, pour lui, est également vouée à l’échec.
